Texas Farm Bureau honors Deatherage for excellence in journalism

SAN ANTONIO, Texas—Texas Farm Bureau (TFB) has honored James Deatherage, television host for From the Ground Up, with its 2013 Excellence in Agricultural Journalism award for outstanding coverage of Texas farm and ranch issues. Deatherage received the award during TFB’s 80th Annual Meeting Dec. 8 in San Antonio.

From the Ground Up is a weekly television segment that airs on KBTX-TV 3, featuring discussions on agriculture issues with farmers and ranchers, legislators and Texas A&M University faculty. The Brazos County Farm Bureau (CFB) nominated Deatherage for the award in the agricultural journalism category.

“Through the television segment and other media outlets, James has made an exceptional effort to cover agricultural-related news and to tell the story of Texas farmers and ranchers,” the nomination stated. “From discussing technological advancements to issues impacting rural life, James raises awareness about agriculture.”

The nominating county also noted that as president and general manager of Producers Cooperative in Bryan, Deatherage is able to interact with a variety of people who come into the store.

“He has been instrumental in educating Brazos Valley residents about agriculture and its impact on their daily lives,” Brazos CFB added.
