Hall reflects on his career with Texas Farm Bureau

This is the last time I’ll do this little piece I call The Minute. I’ve been doing it for more than 10 years as director of Communications for Texas Farm Bureau. I’ll retire this week after 42 years with the organization.

The first thing I wrote for Farm Bureau was on a manual typewriter.

In this job, I’ve seen the birth of the internet, the rapid growth of agricultural advocacy and a lot of folks who think opinion and fact are the same thing.

The issues are remarkably similar. There are fewer farmers and ranchers, at just less than 2 percent of the population now. But they feed all the rest of us.

Ag communicators like me have spoken the mostly unknown truth, challenged conventional wisdom and experienced both the elation and meanness of social media—most of the time with a smile and tongue in cheek.

All things must end and my time has come. Next week, Gary Joiner will be in this space.
