Texas Farm Bureau supports Abbott’s screwworm disaster declaration

The following statement may be attributed to Texas Farm Bureau President in response to Gov. Greg Abbott’s statewide New World Screwworm Disaster Declaration.

“Texas Farm Bureau applauds Gov. Greg Abbott for taking proactive action to prevent the New World screwworm fly from threatening Texas livestock and wildlife. This preemptive disaster declaration gives Texas greater flexibility and resources to respond quickly and effectively should the pest reach our state. Activating the Texas Department of Emergency Management ensures coordination and readiness across agencies to address this serious threat.

“While the New World screwworm is not currently present in Texas, early action is critical to protecting animal health, rural livelihoods and the state’s agricultural economy. We are encouraged by the governor’s leadership and commitment to safeguarding Texas farmers, ranchers and citizens.

“Preparedness remains our strongest defense against this destructive pest.”
