Texas Farm Bureau urges vigilance following additional New World screwworm detection
The following statement may be attributed to Texas Farm Bureau President Russell Boening following today’s confirmed detection of additional New World screwworm in Texas.
“Federal and state agencies are actively implementing a New World screwworm response plan that was prepared and ready for this circumstance.
“Texas Farm Bureau thanks Gov. Greg Abbott, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Texas Animal Health Commission and Texas Parks and Wildlife Department for their focused attention on this matter.
“Livestock owners and all Texans should remain vigilant. Surveillance and reporting are a priority. The quicker an infestation is found, the quicker the New World screwworm can be eradicated.
“The detection of New World screwworm does not impact the safety of our food supply. New World screwworm do not infest meat, fruits, vegetables or other food sources."
