Suggestions to increase Argentinian beef imports harm Texas cattle ranchers

Suggestions to increase Argentinian beef imports harm Texas cattle ranchers

The following statement may be attributed to Texas Farm Bureau President Russell Boening in response to comments from President Donald J. Trump that suggested importing Argentinian beef as a solution to lower beef prices for U.S. consumers.

“Texas Farm Bureau is concerned by recent comments suggesting that importing beef from Argentina could help lower prices for U.S. consumers. While we understand affordability is important for American consumers, such proposals risk undermining the ranch families who work every day to feed our nation.

“Texas farmers and ranchers are already facing historically high input costs, from fuel and feed to equipment and other operating costs. Amid these challenges, strong demand for American beef has been one of the few bright spots helping agricultural producers stay afloat.

“We urge the Trump administration to carefully consider the broader implications of such proposals. Consumer demand for beef remains strong. Now more than ever, we must allow the market to function without interference and support the hardworking families who form the backbone of our nation’s food supply. Texas Farm Bureau looks forward to continuing our work with President Trump and his administration to ensure stability and opportunity for hardworking farm and ranch families.”
