TFB president says organization’s strength rests with disciplined approach
(ARLINGTON, Texas)—The president of Texas Farm Bureau (TFB), the state’s largest general farm and ranch organization, pointed to the organization’s calm, credible and consistent approach as key to the group’s success in representing Texas farmers and ranchers.
Russell Boening, a fourth-generation farmer and rancher from Wilson County, outlined the TFB approach Dec. 6 in his annual meeting address to nearly 1,000 Farm Bureau members meeting in Arlington.
Boening grows feed grains, cotton and wheat, as well as raises cattle and operates a dairy with his brother, near Floresville. He has served as president of Texas Farm Bureau (TFB) and Affiliated Companies since December 2014.
“Texas Farm Bureau’s strength isn’t in shouting for attention. It’s in being calm, credible and consistent. It’s in speaking with purpose,” Boening said. “Our responses are measured. Our messaging is factual. Our influence endures because we choose to think before we speak. We weigh our words carefully and base our positions on facts, not feelings. It begins with policy.”
Boening said TFB’s response reflects the direction adopted by its voting delegates—the grassroots leaders who guide the organization.
“That’s why we often are not the first to react. Others may jump out sooner, but we are deliberate,” he said. “We take our time to ensure accuracy and alignment. That’s not weakness. It’s wisdom.”
Boening said when TFB is measured and studied in its response, it earns a seat at the decision table.
“And that’s where real influence happens. Lose that seat, and we lose our ability to shape the policies that impact Texas agriculture. That’s not an option for our organization,” Boening added.
Boening told members he was proud of how TFB continues to navigate issues in today’s challenging information landscape. He said the organization guards its credibility carefully because it is key to its success in its 92-year history.
